Workshops at Napa Valley College, Upper Campus
1:00 - 2:15 PM: By Arrangement (Parts 1 & 2)
In this 2-part workshop, Paul Hemmings will delve into the fundamentals of arranging tunes for the ukulele for 1 – 3 ukuleles, all the way to a complete ukulele orchestra. It’s a great workshop for anyone who is part of a group, wants to create a group, already leads a group, or just wants to have some ideas that will help their group sound better.
Part I (Saturday, Level 2-3) will focus on arranging tunes for 1-3 ukes, perfect for when you get together to play with a friend or two. You’ll learn how to develop complementary parts by learning how to incorporate intros and outros, how to harmonize a melody, and how to distill a tune down to its essential components.
Part II (Sunday, Level 3-4) picks up where Part I leaves off and will focus on arranging for anywhere from 4 ukes to a complete ukulele big band. You’ll get into the basics of 4-part harmony, modulating keys, utilizing dynamics, and much more. Perfect for players looking to write arrangements of tunes for their ukulele group or club. While it is recommended that you take both parts, you can also take either one.
2:30 - 3:45 PM: Quantum Chord Mechanics (Parts 1 & 2)
This 2-day intensive workshop will clarify everything you’ve ever wanted to know about chords, and in the process, unlock the potential of your instrument’s entire fretboard. Saturday’s workshop (Part One) will cover intervals, triads, and a few 7th chords; on Sunday (Part Two) the focus will be on more 7th chords, chord extensions (9ths, 11ths, 13ths), and a Grand Unified Theory to tie everything together. This is a great workshop for confident strummers, players interested in chord melodies, and anybody with the desire to learn a system for playing any kind of chord on the ukulele.
